Catherine Devaney, LMFT, LCDP

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

At the time that I decided to move full-time into providing therapy, I had a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Delaware, awarded in 1981, and wanted to upgrade my skills to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  To that end, I received post-Master’s training at the Philadelphia Child and Family Therapy Training Center (formerly Philadelphia Child Guidance Center), an accredited marriage and family therapy training program that is one of the birth places of family therapy in the United States. I attended PCFTTC from 2016 until 2019, working in a variety of training settings, until I completed my hours for independent licensure as an LMFT.

Along the way, I received certification as an Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor in 2017 and a License as a Chemical Dependency Professional in 2018.  Since 2019, I have been working full-time delivering clinical services directly to people experiencing complex trauma, codependency, substance use disorder, and marriage and family problems and concerns.  In 2020, I was designated as a Clinical Fellow by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). The Clinical Fellow designation is granted to Professional Members of AAMFT who have met the highest level of MFT licensure in the United States.

My primary approach to therapy is person-centered, integrating tools and techniques that are evidence-based and proven to be helpful in the treatment of trauma, family and couples problems, and substance use disorder.  These practices include Structural Family Therapy, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma-Focused CBT.  I am a registered full-member therapist with the EMDR International Association.  My focus is on demonstrating empathy and helping my clients, who are adolescents and adults, including families with adult children, to establish a safe and stable foundation from which to learn and grow.  Seeking therapy requires courage, and it would be my honor to work with you to offer a safe and caring place for you and your family to talk about yourselves, your lives, and the things in your lives that you would like to improve on. Together we can collaborate to use our strengths to help solve problems and achieve important goals.

I spend my free time with my family--including my houseful of grandchildren and pets--walking, reading, and doing art projects.
